Mahindra Scorpio-N, a worthy upgrade with attention to detail

The new variant of Mahindra Scorpio-n is at par with the modern design standards; it also manages to well retain its distinctive identity that we are all fan of

Mahindra Scorpio-N

The famous and rowdy SUV is back with a new design overhaul; added with a bunch of new feature updates. We are talking about one of the most popular and easily recognizable icons of Indian motoring- The Mahindra Scorpio-N. This was one of the most awaited SUV launches in a while and why not, this year also marked two decades' journey of the Scorpio!

Having more than 8,00,000 units sold, this SUV is a gem in Mahindra’s crown. Have they made this worth considering over the competition? We will find it in this review soon.

Design- Credit where it's due

The Scorpio has always lived upto the expectations of its fans and Mahindra has done some serious work here, while still sticking to the old school boxier design, but giving the car a modernized look. This is the widest and largest Mahindra Scorpio we have ever seen, even bigger in some aspects than Innova Crysta and Toyota Fortuner. The SUV will come in multiple color variants, 7 to be precise. You can check all the variants from here. It has retained its signature headlights with a modern looks, there are stylish indicator lights with directional lighting. Available to the top variants, this also has automatic fog lights, a signature bumper and its iconic engine grill. Instead of working with muted colors, Mahindra has used chrome adequately for detailing on door handles as well as on roof handles. What’s more? It has even bigger tail lamps with a slight curve to the sides. The overall personality of the car is taller now.

Cabin - Spacious at front comfort all around

The cabin is where you will spend most of your time while you are in this SUV, as for the first glance, the seats are quite comfy and ventilated. The dashboard is also twin colored, stitched with a leather finish. There is a 9" infotainment touch screen similar to XUV700 and other models of Mahindra. The interface feels lag-free except for the rear camera as mentioned by OVERDRIVE in their review here. The ladder design does pay off and you feel at height while inside the car. What’s best is there is a sunroof, though not a panorama but it is due to the ladder design that Mahindra has adopted for this built. The front seats are spacious, there is a wireless charger space too.

While the front seats are spacious, rear seats with fixed headrest may find it a bit stiff also the knee space and lack of seat adjustability is most suited, but it is subjective. Scorpio has given twin AC vents and one type-C port here. Though we believe more could have been done in this regard.

The last two seats are where things get tighter, there is very less cooling arrangement and knee space can be problematic for tall adults. The windows are tall, which means the viewing will be great from inside for those who are in pursuit of adventures and viewing the serene. The driving visibility is superb. The exceptionally tall seating provides a commanding view of the roads. Overall, the boot space, interior and seating are mostly good and Mahindra has been quality conscious here.

Sound- Zero compromises here

The sound system is equipped with a 12-speaker Sony audio (carried over from the XUV700) that sounds absolutely superb and has a punchy bass which is another plus.

Engine, tires and Our take

There are multiple variants with mHawk and mStalion variants both in Petrol and Diesel, also with automatic and manual transmissions. There is even a 4x4 variant available in top models that will further add charm to the off-roading experience of adventure enthusiasts. The engines are well-tuned and are taken from XUV700 and previous models of Scorpio, giving a reliable and punchy performance that is both enthralling as well as well-managed. The torque and acceleration are all in line and the ride never felt slow or behind in anything.

Scorpio boasts a well-cushioned ride over most road surfaces encountered in India. The Scorpio N rides on 18 or 17-inch wheels depending on the variant you choose. And the ride feels comfortable on all the options.

The top-end models will come with six airbags, all-four disc brakes, ESC and multi-mode traction control.

Our Views on Mahindra Scorpio-N

Mahindra has done justice to its legendary brand by giving it a worthy upgrade and overhaul that its fans were waiting for. For the pricing that starts from 12 lakh, it is worth considering the option in the 7-seaters and ‘big daddy’ SUV segment.
